Hurricanes comeback falls short in OT

LETHBRIDGE – The cold spell for the Lethbridge Hurricanes extended Friday night, Jan. 26, as the club dropped their fourth straight decision.

Fortunately, they did salvage a point by forcing overtime in a 3-2 loss at home to the Western Hockey League’s top team, the Moose Jaw Warriors.

After battling through a scoreless opening period, the Warriors struck twice in less than two minutes midway through the second – including one on the power play. With 15 seconds to go in the frame, the Hurricanes’ Keltie Jeri-Leon managed to find the back of the Warriors net to cut the lead to one.

The third saw Moose Jaw lock-down defensively, restricting Lethbridge to only two shots on goal through 19 minutes of play. A third shot would do it though. With time winding down and 26 seconds left on the clock, Jadon Joseph buried his sixth of the season to even the score 2-2 and send the game to OT.

That’s where the comeback ended though, as former Hurricane and current WHL points leader, Brayden Burke, beat Lethbridge netminder Logan Flodell to end the game.

While the ‘Canes have now lost four straight, it is worth noting that they have taken a point in their last two games, with the previous one coming against the third overall Kelowna Rockets on Wednesday.

As for implications in the standings, not much changed with the loss as the Hurricanes remain comfortably in a playoff spot in the Central Division. They currently hold down second place, five points behind Medicine Hat and five points ahead of Kootenay. More importantly though, they hold a 14 point edge over playoff outsider, Calgary.

Next up is an important road contest against Red Deer on Sunday, Jan. 28. It presents an opportunity to get their game back-on-track, as the Rebels have managed just one win in their last 10 games.

Not to get too far ahead of ourselves, but the next one after that should get even more attention, as the Swift Current Broncos are in Lethbridge on Friday, Feb. 2. That will mark the first game for Giorgio Estephan, Stuart Skinner and Tanner Nagel as visitors to the ENMAX Centre.
