Down 2-0 in the third, Bellerive pulls out hat trick for the Canes’ 3-2 win

LETHBRIDGE – After a roaring 5-2 win over the Swift Current Broncos (the WHL’s second ranked team) the night before, the Canes’ action was somewhat muted against the Edmonton Oil Kings (the WHL’s bottom dweller) during the first two periods on Saturday night.

The first period saw the Oil Kings out shoot the Canes 10-5 and slide the first goal past Reece Klassen to take a 1-0 lead.

The next 20 minutes saw a jump in penalty minutes, most of which were levelled against Edmonton, for holding, roughing, slashing an interference.   It also saw the Oil Kings add to their lead, as Trey Fix-Wolansky got an insurance goal past Klassen to put Edmonton out front 2-0.

The third frame offered up and few more penalties, but no scoring, until the last five minutes of action. At that point, Canes Captain, Jordy Bellerive grabbed control of scoring and nailed a hat trick.

At the 15:16 mark, Bellerive took advantage of a power play, to punch out his first goal of the game.  Two minutes later, Bellerive tied the game on a point shot, off an assist by Ty Prefontaine and Egor Zudilov. Bellerive didn’t let up. With a minute left in regulation, he took advantage of another power play to record his 37th goal of the season, and the game winner.

The Hurricanes are 25-21-6 on the season.  The team’s next game is Friday, February 9, in Moose Jaw.
