LETHBRIDGE – The ice on city of Lethbridge lakes still has not reached the safety standard required for public use, the city said in a news release.

As of Feb. 1, the city said the average ice thickness of Chinook and Henderson Lakes is 10 inches, and snow-covered. Nicholas Sheran Lake is 9.5 inches thick on average, and also snow-covered. Earlier this year, the city told Lethbridge News Now it considers 10 inches the safe standard for ice. However, all three are described as in poor condition, and below the standards for public use.

A construction project is also affecting Nicholas Sheran. Crews working on the irrigation system have to break up the ice on the south side of the lake, while they replace the intake pipe. That work is expected to last until Feb. 23. People are advised to stay off Nicholas Sheran Lake during that time.

The city is also reminding people that storm ponds are never considered safe, and contact is prohibited.
