PINCHER CREEK – A 10-year-old girl has been killed while taking part in a school ski trip at Castle Mountain.

RCMP said the student at Canyon Elementary School in Pincher Creek was part of a group on the trip Tuesday morning at approximately 11:30 a.m. when she lost control and struck a pole. She was wearing a helmet at the time.

Ski resort staff attended to the girl until emergency services arrived from Pincher Creek. Because of poor weather, she was transported by ground ambulance to Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary.

Police were told she had died at 9:45 p.m. Tuesday.

The medical examiner is investigating the child’s death, along with Pincher Creek RCMP. Victim Services is helping the girl’s family, as well as the staff and students at Canyon Elementary. The school was closed Wednesday due to road conditions.

The girl’s name has not been released.
