February snowfall well above average

LETHBRIDGE – March is typically a snowier month than February in Lethbridge. If that holds true this year, we’re in for a nasty start to spring.

With a week left to go in February, according to Environment Canada data at weatherstats.ca, Lethbridge has recorded 52.6 cm of snow. The average for the month over the past 30 years is 12.2 cm.

In each of the past five years, March has exceeded February for total snow. Last winter saw 16.6 cm in February and 24 cm in March, but December was the snowiest month, with 28.6 cm.

Going back to October, this winter has seen 141.6 cm of snow fall on Lethbridge, or nearly 56 inches. Last winter, the city recorded a total of 97.4 cm of snow.

It’s the most snow since the winter of 2010-11, which had a total of 143.3 cm. The record appears safe, though. In 1966-67, Lethbridge had a total of 398.9 cm, or 157 inches – 13 feet – of snow.

On the other hand, just two winters ago we totalled 41 cm of snow, and only 21 cm in the winter of 2011-12, which appears to be the record for least amount of snow.
