Man accused of dangerous, impaired driving released on bail

LETHBRIDGE – A man facing charges in connection with an incident that forced the closure of Scenic Drive North for an hour late last year, has been released from custody.

The Crown prosecutor consented to Joshua Michael Hiott’s release Thursday, Feb. 22, on $3,000 no-cash bail, meaning he will only need to pay if he breaches any of his release conditions.

Under those conditions, Hiott is banned from consuming any drugs or alcohol, he cannot operate a motor vehicle, he must abide by a curfew and attend a residential treatment program.

Hiott’s lawyer, Darcy Shurtz, then asked for an adjournment of the matter until Mar. 22, saying that how Hiott does in treatment will have a direct impact on the resolution of his charges – those being dangerous driving, impaired driving, possession of stolen property, and possession of break-in tools.

Shortly before 9:30 p.m. on Nov. 16, Lethbridge Police say officers observed a speeding car with no licence plate on Highway 3. It then exited onto Scenic Drive going southbound, running a red light and hitting a northbound vehicle.

The driver of the car then allegedly tried to run away before being taken into custody.

Police further allege that the man was impaired by drugs, and that a search of the vehicle resulted in the discovery of numerous items that had previously been reported stolen.
