Volunteers needed for Classroom Agricultural Program

Mar 5, 2018 | 5:27 PM

LETHBRIDGE –  The Classroom Agricultural Program (CAP) is looking for volunteers for this year’s programs to help Alberta students understand agriculture and its impacts.

CAP is presented to grade four students across Alberta at no charge, between March and June of each year. Volunteers deliver the program through story-telling and fun activities.

Students learn about the food they eat and where it comes from.  The program also highlights the vast opportunities in agriculture and the people, producers and industries that drive this trade.

The province is divided into 12 zones and each zone has its own coordinator, who is the volunteers’ go-to-person to acquire materials, help with presentations and talk about any problems they might have.

Right now, they need volunteers in the Lethbridge, Cardston, Raymond and Claresholm areas.

Volunteers come from all aspects fo the agricultural community. One class might have a veterinarian, while the next class may have someone who works on a cattle ranch and the next class might have someone who works in a country grain elevator. The diversity and the strength of the volunteers is what makes the program worth while.

The time committment is only about five or six hours. Each volunteer receives a volunteer kit, which includes sample presentations, such as up-to-date agriculture issues.  Volunteers call their assigned teacher and they set up a time for the presentation that works for both the teacher and the volunteer.
