EDMONTON – The Lethbridge Hurricanes headed up the AB-2 on Tuesday, Mar. 13, to take on the Western Hockey League’s worst team, the Edmonton Oil Kings and were thumped 5-1.

The Hurricanes losing streak is now at six games, with only three games remaining in the regular season.

Things actually started off well for Lethbridge, when Jadon Joseph tapped home a pass from Brad Morrison for his 9th goal of the season at 5:48 of the first period to make it 1-0.

The rest of the opening frame stayed relatively quiet, and the Hurricanes went to the locker room with a 1-0 lead after the first period. They also outshot the Oil Kings 12-11 in the opening 20 minutes.

From that point on, it was all Edmonton Oil Kings.

At 2:09 of the second period, Colton Kehler scored on the power play to even the game 1-1.

Then just over five minutes later, Nick Bowman put the Oil Kings ahead. Conner McDonald would make it 3-1, again on the powerplay at 14:50 before Tomas Soustal continued the Oil King run making it 4-1 on the power play once again at 16:08.

But the Oil Kings weren’t finished there, as Trey Fix-Wolansky beat Hurricanes goaltender Logan Flodell for his 31st goal of the season just before the second period came to a close at 18:48 increasing Edmonton’s lead to 5-1.

The Oil Kings outshot the Hurricanes 16-5 in the middle frame.

The third period was scoreless, despite the Hurricanes pushing the Oil Kings and outshooting them 10-8 in the final frame.

Overall, the shots favoured Edmonton 35-27 for the game. The Oil Kings went 3-5 on the man-advantage, while the Hurricanes went 0-5 on the power play.

Logan Flodell made 30 saves in the loss.

The Hurricanes record now sits at 32-31-6 on the season. Lethbridge faces a quick turnaround, as they’ll head to Red Deer for a first round playoff preview against the Rebels on Wednesday night.
