RED DEER – The woes continued for the Lethbridge Hurricanes on Wednesday, Mar. 14, as they lost their seventh straight game – this time a 5-2 decision against the Red Deer Rebels.

With the loss, the Hurricanes are now sitting at .500 on season with a record of 32-32-6, just three points ahead of the Rebels for 2nd place in the Central Division.

Each team has two games remaining in the regular season.

The Rebels opened the scoring at 12:45 of the first period when Kristian Reichel buried his 33rd of the season past Hurricanes goaltender Reece Klassen.

That was the only scoring in the opening frame, though the Hurricanes did press outshooting Red Deer 12-8, but Rebels goaltender Riley Lamb shut the door.

Just over a minute into the second period, former Hurricane Josh Tarzwell scored to make it 2-0 for the Rebels on the power play.

The Hurricanes used the man-advantage to get on the board, making it 2-1 at 5:52 of the second when Zane Franklin scored his 14th of the season.

But the penalty kill, as it has been throughout the losing streak, struggled again when Kristian Reichel buried his second goal of the game on the power play making it 3-1 and restoring the Rebels two goal advantage.

The second period buzzer sounded with that 3-1 score standing up, and the Rebels outshot the Hurricanes 12-10 in the middle frame as well.

The first ten minutes of the third period saw the Rebels and Hurricanes trade goals, with Brandon Hagel giving the Rebels a 4-1 lead at 3:37 before Jake Elmer buried his 18th of the year at 6:40 to cut the deficit to 4-2.

A hard push by the Hurricanes was all for naught, as Reese Johnson beat Klassen with less than five minutes to go in the game to cement the 5-2 final score.

The Hurricanes did outshoot the Rebels 12-5 in the third, and 34-25 overall, but couldn’t solve Lamb.

Now the Hurricanes face a home and home series this weekend against the Medicine Hat Tigers before they open the Western Hockey League playoffs against the Rebels on March 23.
