Losing streak hits eight games as Hurricanes fall to Tigers

LETHBRIDGE – It goes without saying, but this is definitely not the way you want to go into the post-season.

The Lethbridge Hurricanes losing skid stretched to an ugly eight games Friday, Mar. 16, as they fell 4-2 to the Medicine Hat Tigers while playing their final home game of the regular season.

They started out fairly strong against their Central Division rivals, outshooting the Tigers 14-10 through the opening 20 minutes and even appearing to score the first of the game, although it was waved-off following a review.

Despite the set-back, the Hurricanes managed to open the scoring four minutes into the second, as Calen Addison drilled a point-shot past Tigers goalie Michael Bullion to make it 1-0.

After allowing Medicine Hat to tie it up midway through the second period, Lethbridge then surrendered the go-ahead goal 16 seconds into the third.

Hurricanes captain Jordy Bellerive evened the score at the 11:41 mark of the final frame, finding Addison with a crisp pass and then converting on the rebound from his teammate’s shot.

The game-winner arrived with just under three minutes to play, as the Tigers’ Tyler Preziuso found Ryan Chyzowski all alone at the side the Hurricanes’ net, and he jammed it by Lethbridge netminder Logan Flodell. An empty netter less than a minute later would cap the scoring at 4-2.

Now, there is some good news.

First off, the Hurricanes are safe where they are in the Central standings thanks to some help from Kootenay Friday night. The Ice handed Red Deer a 6-2 loss, meaning the Rebels can no longer catch the ‘Canes for second place. That locks up home-ice advantage in the first round series against Red Deer, which could be crucial – Lethbridge has gone 19-13-4-0 at home this season, versus 13-20-2-0 as the visitors.

The other good news is that the Hurricanes still have one more game to try and end the skid and go into the playoffs on a good note. They complete a home-and-home series in Medicine Hat on Saturday, Mar. 17, to end the regular season.
