“Shoeless Joe” apprehended by Coaldale RCMP

COALDALE – He wanted to run away from RCMP so badly, he literally lost his shoes in the process.

RCMP Staff Sgt. Glen Henry says around 2:30 p.m. an officer stopped a truck in front of the local Home Hardware. However, instead of speaking with the officer, getting a couple of tickets and likely getting his vehicle towed, Henry says the driver took off on foot.

“In the process of running away, he lost his pair of shoes there, and we continued a foot pursuit through the construction zone, the new dental office and in and around the Home Hardware store, a church there.”

Seven officers were involved in the chase, including a police service dog, as residents pointed out where they had seen the suspect go.

“He kept sort of running around through buildings and through the mud and over fences and that kind of stuff,” describes Henry. “And so, we just set up until we basically got close enough to the point where we could arrest him.”

He also offered some insight as to why the man may have fled.

“The driver was alone. The vehicle was neither registered nor insured, so that may have something to do with it… I don’t think much of this made a lot of sense.”

The driver is now facing several traffic related charges, along with flight from police.
