RED DEER – Despite a late Rebel comeback, the Lethbridge Hurricanes are a win away from the second round thanks to a powerplay goal by defenceman Calen Addison to cap off a 5-4 overtime victory over Red Deer on Tuesday, March 27.

All of the talk from the Hurricanes about special teams work in practise last week has paid off, as Lethbridge went 3-for-5 with the man advantage while holding the Rebels powerplay to a single goal on five chances.

The Rebels thought they had the game’s opening goal just past the 30 second mark, when Mason McCarty put one past Hurricanes goaltender Logan Flodell.

But after a conference between the referees, it was ruled no goal.

Rebels forward Chris Douglas took a tripping penalty a minute later, and the Hurricanes red hot powerplay went to work.

Taylor Ross banged home a rebound at the front of the net at 1:35, his third of the postseason, to give the Hurricanes a 1-0 lead.

Looking to change the momentum, Arshdeep Bains dropped the gloves with Matthew Stanley shortly after the Hurricanes goal.

It didn’t pay off initially, with both teams battled back and fourth until Brandon Hagel buried a shorthanded goal, his third of the playoffs, past Flodell at 18:14 of the first period to tie the game at 1-1.

That’s how the opening frame would end, with the Hurricanes also holding the edge in shots at 13-7.

In the second period, Zachary Cox gave Lethbridge a 2-1 at 6:48 and not long after another fight broke out.

Ty Prefontaine took issue with a hit on Brad Morrison and dropped the gloves with Reese Johnson.

The rough stuff provided a bit of a spark to the Rebels, who tied the game 2-2 at 13:52 thanks to a Kristian Reichel goal.

It looked like that’s how the second period would wrap up, but Brandon Hagel took a delay of game penalty giving the Hurricanes powerplay another opportunity.

The hottest player in the Canadian Hockey League, Brad Morrison, scored with just 18 seconds to go in the second to give Lethbridge a 3-2 lead heading to the final 20 minutes.

Red Deer outshot Lethbridge 13-12 in the middle frame.

Just past the 12-minute mark in the third period, Hurricanes captain Jordy Bellerive made it 4-2 and Lethbridge was on the verge of taking a strange hold 3-0 series lead.

But the Rebels didn’t roll over, a minute later Grayson Pawlenchuk beat Flodell, closing to gap to 4-3.

Then with under a minute to play, and Jadon Joseph in the penalty box, Reichel’s second goal of the game tied things at 4-4 and sent the game to overtime.

Red Deer outshot Lethbridge for the second straight period, by an 8-4 margin, but the Hurricanes held the overall shot advantage 29-28 after 60 minutes of play.

Brandon Hagel took an ill-advised goaltender interference penalty at the 20-minute mark of the third period, so the Hurricanes began overtime with a powerplay.

Just 38 seconds into the extra frame Calen Addison beat Rebels goaltender Riley Lamb to give the Hurricanes a 3-0 series lead.

Addison, Morrison and Bellerive all had goals to go along with two assists each to lead the way for Lethbridge.

Logan Flodell made 25 saves in the victory.

The Hurricanes will have an opportunity to close out Red Deer on Wednesday night.
