Cooler weather reducing flood threat from snowpack

LETHBRIDGE – Concerns lessen by the day about potential flooding. And a river forecast engineer for Alberta Environment and Parks says we have the cooler than average weather to thank.

Nathalie Brunet says there are still concerns in places like the M.D. of Taber, which is under a state of local emergency, due to snow on the ground blocking culverts and leading to water backing up over roads. But that threat is lessening.

As for the melt, Brunet said it’s been gradual, and that’s good news.

“(It’s) because we have this gradual melting of the snowpack,” she explained. “Temperatures have been above zero but not too far above zero, and largely cooling overnight has kind of let the water release slowly from the snowpack, make its way slowly into the creeks or slowly get absorbed along the way, so really our saving grace has been that slow melting of the snowpack.”

Brunet said river levels have started to rise but within a normal range.

“Some of the snow is starting to go away, and we’re seeing kind of a normal response in some of the streams already. So, small water level rises that are typical, and by and large so far, it’s been good, I would say.”

Brunet said she will be paying attention to the snowfall or rain that’s expected for early next week because it could have an impact.
