COUTTS – An American couple faces multiple criminal and customs charges following the seizure of two dozen firearms at the Coutts border crossing.

Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) said the two were headed for Alaska in an SUV and trailer when they stopped at the border Monday, April 9. When referred for examination, customs officers found 16 long guns and eight handguns that had allegedly not been declared. Four of them were prohibited, which means they’re illegal to import.

According to the news release, officers also seized 70 overcapacity magazines that had not been declared.

Christopher Douglas Gies, 41, and Caroline Elizabeth Gies, 42, will be in court in Lethbridge June 4, on seven Customs Act charges and eight counts under the Criminal Code. No hometown was given for the two.
