CIC meeting on cannabis legalization to take place in late June

LETHBRIDGE –  The public will get a chance to listen to experts, city staff, and to give feedback on cannabis legalization. But not for another couple of months.

At Monday’s council meeting (April 16), a decision was made for the Open and Effective Government Committee (OEG) to look at ways of providing information to the public.

Councillor Jeffery Coffman says the OEG will model an upcoming Community Issues Committee meeting based on a similar oil and gas CIC session four years ago.

“The idea is to approach it from the same frame. That we want to get information- we want to get as much fact and data as we can in order to get the appropriate feedback and conversation going in the community.”

While some other cities like Medicine Hat have already held public information sessions or have sent out surveys to gauge public opinion, Coffman believes that because at this point it doesn’t look like legalization will occur before late summer or early fall, it will give municipalities more time.

“We have everything to look at, from land-use planning, to police regulations to parks bylaws. There’s a huge gamut of things we have to consider.

“This is very much about getting the fact, getting data. What is the medical position on it in terms of pain management, in terms of addiction –  things of that nature…. what can we do and what can’t we do?”

The OEG will have until May 14 to report back to council, at which time plans will be made to hold a CIC meeting sometime in late June.
