SASKATOON — Saskatchewan RCMP are releasing more details about the investigation into the deadly crash that killed 16 members of the Humboldt Broncos.

At a briefing in Regina this morning, RCMP confirmed the tractor-trailer unit was in the intersection at the time of the collission and investigators are working on determining why it was there.  RCMP say it is to soon in the investigation to say whether the truck driver blew through the stop sign.

The intersection where the crash occurred has been shut down today to allow 12 RCMP experts in accident reconstruction to further analyze the scene.  50 interviews with eye witnesses, victims, and the driver have been conducted with more to come over the next few weeks.  Over 5500 photos have been collected.  RCMP are also using 3-d technology and unmanned aerial footage of the crash site to aid in the investigation.

Engine control modules from both vehicles have been recovered and sent to California for expert analysis.  Data from these modules should show if there were any changes in speed or application of brakes around the time of the crash.  Mechanical inspections have also been conducted on the bus and tractor-trailer.  RCMP are currently waiting for those reports.

Right now, the RCMP is still working on evidence recovery and say there is a lot of work to be done in the coming days and weeks.  No charges have been laid and the truck driver is in regular contact with police.  Further updates from the RCMP will be released as the investigation progresses.
