Robotic milking systems providing info on bovine health

GUELPH, ON —  University of Guelph researchers say a new study shows robotic milking systems can provide valuable information about the overall health of cattle.

The researchers tracked data captured by the robotic systems and found indicators of illness showed up days or even weeks before the animal was diagnosed.

Having information on their animals’ health as soon as they become sick or injured is vital to farmers and the animals.

Study co-author Trevor DeVries — whose family has a history of dairy farming — says these days the average dairy farm in Canada might have 80 to 1000 cows and it’s hard to note subtle changes in individual animals.
