Flooded road at Nanton an annual event, but alerts remain elsewhere

LETHBRIDGE – It was an eye-catching sight, but not particularly unusual, according to the Town of Nanton.

Water was rushing down 26 Ave. at the north end of town Saturday, April 21, and cascading into the ditches along Highway 2. However, the town said that tends to happen every spring, and by the next day it had ended. This may have been more substantial than other years, however.

Earlier in the week, Mosquito Creek rose to a point where it was level with the banks, but then began to drop. The surrounding M.D. of Willow Creek ended its overland flood alert Wednesday, April 18.

Communities that remain under a State of Local Emergency include the M.D. of Taber, Vulcan County, and County of Forty Mile. A number of school bus routes were cancelled Monday, April 23 by Palliser Regional Schools and Horizon School Division due to flooded roads.

In the M.D. of Taber, many roads remain closed on both sides of Highway 3, while Vulcan County is maintaining a list of road closures. Many of them are in the immediate Vulcan and Ensign areas, with hazards listed around Lomond and Travers. Road closures in County of Forty Mile are scattered throughout the municipality, though some have reopened.
