Building that houses Lethbridge’s post office for sale

LETHBRIDGE – A “for sale” sign is being hung in one of downtown Lethbridge’s most distinctive buildings.
The federal government has listed the J.D. Higginbotham Building at 704 4 Ave. S., known to most people as the post office, for sale. The oldest part of the building, with its working clock tower, was built in 1912-13 in the architectural style known as beaux arts. Canada Post has been located there continuously ever since. An addition was built in 1958.
A spokesperson for Public Services and Procurement Canada, the federal department that manages government-owned property, said the building has been declared surplus to the government’s needs. It was offered at market value to all levels of government before being publicly listed.
In an e-mail, Tom Corrigan, a regional communications advisor based in Edmonton, explained the purchaser would be required to negotiate lease agreements with the current occupants, which include the Correctional Service of Canada and Canada Revenue Agency in addition to Canada Post. The brochure published by Avison Young indicates the entire second and third floors of the older part of the building are vacant.
