Ottawa politicians return to office Monday as convoy carries on

OTTAWA – Much of downtown Ottawa remains in a forced lockdown today as a convoy of Canadians demanding an end to all COVID-19 restrictions continues its stranglehold on the nation’s capital for a fourth day.

As the House of Commons prepares to resume sitting, most M-Ps are likely to attend virtually as the hybrid sitting rules for COVID-19 remain in place.

Ottawa city councillor Catherine McKenney, however, says downtown residents and business owners who endured a weekend of noise, intimidation, and vandalism are fed up.

The crowds of thousands from the weekend are noticeably thinner today. Numerous trucks still line the street in front of Parliament Hill and many businesses in the area are keeping their doors locked.

The demonstrators who remain say they’ll stay put until all vaccine mandates and public health orders are lifted, even as they protest thousands of kilometres from any of the provincial legislatures that imposed most of those orders.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is set to address Canadians this afternoon, following three days of unrest that have brought divisive arguments about vaccine mandates and public health restrictions soaring back to the top of the agenda.
