Masquerade Ball to Support Young Immigrants in Lethbridge

Jan 18, 2016 | 10:48 AM

LETHBRIDGE: The Urban Spirits Rotary Club in Lethbridge is stepping up to support young immigrants coming to our community.

They have chosen the Lethbridge Family Services Immigrant Services Youth Empowerment Program as the recipient of their annual fundraising event.

Event Chair and Rotary member Sharon Rempel goes over what you can expect at the ‘Light Up the Night Masquerade Ball’, “We encourage the big party atmosphere, it’s not really a very formal dinner. Our theme is Korean themed, so we have LA Chefs working with us to create a really unique Korean menu. At the event we have some amazing performers, we have fortune tellers and tarot card readers, we have professional breakdancers coming.”

Money raised through the event will help the Youth Empowerment Program reach more children in the community, as they’re currently limited by their funding. They help children adjust to life here, by working with them on their english, teaching them about Canadian customs and holidays, and showing them how to deal with things like winter in southern Alberta.

Vic Rizal, a youth settlement practitioner with Immigrant Services, goes over another major part of what they offer, “A lot of kids from refugee camps and war-torn countries, they come here with lots of emotions and trauma, so working together with YWCA to do a Project Child Recovery, it’s really important to help those kids deal with emotional issues and other things.”

The ball has been set for March 12 at the Coast Lethbridge Hotel, and tickets can be purchased at all three Lethbridge Family Services locations, Eventbrite and through Urban Spirit Rotary Club members. Rempel noted that the club meets every Monday night at 5:00 at Moxies and they will have tickets available there.
