LETHBRIDGE: Guidelines from the Province are recommendations, not requirements, as School Districts across Alberta develop Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity policies.

Lethbridge West MLA Shannon Phillips spoke Friday afternoon as all school boards in the province are required to hand in a draft policy to the New Democrat government by March 31st.

“Our approach as a government, from the beginning, has been to allow local democracy to take effect and allow school boards their time to implement their best practices.

Some parents, Catholic school trustees and members of the church have opposed the policies.

“The majority of people in Lethbridge West and across the province support safe, caring and inclusive communities and safe, caring and inclusive schools.”

The regulations and procedures will address districts’ responsibility to students and staff who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and/or gender-diverse.

The Lethbridge School District held their first parent feedback meeting this week.
