LETHBRIDGE:     A somewhat nostalgic event, as the Lethbridge Curling Club hosted the 77th Annual Shirtsleeve bonspiel.

A total of 56 teams took part in the event, beginning Tuesday, January 26th, and running through the weak to the finals on Sunday, January 31st.

Sunday’s “A” Event Winning team was the Darren Moulding Rink.

This past week’s Shirtsleeve bonspiel will be the last to take place in the current location on 6 Avenue south.  Next year’s event will be held in the new Crossing location on the city’s west side.

The Lethbridge Curling Club home, which is a joint curling and skating facility at the Civic Center, was completed in 1950 and the building is beginning to show its age.

While the Civic Centre has been home to the Curling Club for 66-yerars, the club’s history shows it actually dates back to 1887, when teams played on ponds and sloughs. As interest grew in the sport, different facilities were developed to accommodate players. The original club membership has grown from 38 members to the roughly 1100 curlers who are now involved on a weekly basis.

The Lethbridge Curling Club runs Leagues 7 days a week, with a wide variety of leagues – everything from rookie and junior, to high school, seniors and super leagues
