Youth Given Jail Time for Attempted Robbery

LETHBRIDGE: A 16-year old who admitted to attempted robbery, while serving a deferred sentence for another robbery, has been handed 40-days in jail.

Around 8:50-pm on November 6, 2015, three youths entered a gas station along McMaster Boulevard West, with one carrying what appeared to be a firearm and another armed with a baseball bat. All three were wearing bandanas, sunglasses and had their hoods pulled up. They demanded cash and cigarettes, but fled the scene on foot when the clerk refused and called police.

It was later discovered that the firearm was an airsoft pistol.

A pre-sentence report prepared for the youth revealed that he suffers from FASD and cognitive issues.

The Crown noted that the youth has already served 55-days of pre-trial custody, but said additional time was needed, stressing that the teen couldn’t even finish his sentence for a prior robbery before doing it again.

While the judge acknowledged the challenges faced by the youth, he agreed that time in custody was necessary for the integrity of the justice system and imposed the 40-day sentence. Following that he has 20-days of community supervision and one year of probation.

Charges against the other two youths remain before the court.
