Students Give Up Luxuries to Tackle Youth Homelessness

LETHBRIDGE – University students will be braving the elements for a good cause over the next five days.

Beginning on March 13, the students will be living on the U of L Students’ Union patio without their everyday luxuries.

They’ll construct a shelter from only cardboard and duct tape, electronics will be taken away and they’ll have to rely on generous by-passers for food. Until March 18, they’ll also be expected to attend their normal classes.

Over $55,000 has been raised for local charities over the course of the nine-year, annual fundraiser. The goal is to raise another $10,000 this year for Wood’s Homes.

Director of the Management Students’ Society, Conner Williams, says youth homelessness can hit home for a lot of students, and raising awareness with something like the national “Five Days for the Homeless” initiative is critical in tackling the issue.

Those who wish to donate can visit the U of L campus, or the “Five Days” website.
