Province to work with Municipalities on Strategic Transportation Infrastructure Program

LETHBRIDGE:   The Province is looking to work with municipalities and stakeholders on how to improve the Strategic Transportation Infrastructure Program, or STIP.

Transportation Minister Brian Mason says infrastructure support is a big issue for municipalities, especially smaller ones.

“I know in many communities good, quality roads and local bridges can have a significant impact on the local economy. Investing in municipal infrastructure is about investing in Albertans. It’s about investing in people and supporting local economies.”

Stakeholder consultations will begin Tuesday at the AAMDC Convention. Mason says they will be looking at three main components.

“The Resource Road Program, and that’s to help municipalities that have extra burdens from heavy traffic caused by important resource development. The Community Airport Program to help small communities maintain their local airports, and the Local Bridge Program.”

Three consultations will be held in the North, Central and South areas of the Province. Following that the Province will be conducting a survey with STIP stakeholders.
