Land Owners Group Joins Effort to Restrict OHV’s from Public Lands

SOUTHERN ALBERTA – The Livingstone Landowners Guild has joined conservation groups and individuals from around Alberta, in calling on the provincial government to restrict the use of off-highway vehicles (OHV).

The group is made up of ranchers, acreage owners and small business operators near Highway 22. In February they sent a communique to the province, outlining their concerns and offering some suggestions.

Group spokesperson Dan McKim outlined one of their biggest concerns when it comes to OHV use on public lands, “I think as far as creek crossings go and river crossings, it certainly disrupts the flow of the water, the cleanliness of the water, and of course you’re causing some detrimental effect to aquatic life, whether it be a fish or anything else that lives in that body of water.”

The group also noted that unregulated activity can disrupt wildlife like elk and bears, but also help spread weeds across native rangelands.

McKim did offer one potential solution for keeping as many people happy as possible, “The main idea is that we have to get some control over it, we have to probably get some designated areas where you’ll be legislated and regulated, where you can go with these machines. Anywhere else I hope will be out of bounds.”

Lethbridge News Now will be following up with the Alberta government, to see what their options are for addressing the concern.
