Update from Ag Info Centre on Seeding and Moisture Levels

ALBERTA – The ground in Alberta is dry, but a field crops specialist with Alberta Agriculture says most farmers will wait a bit longer to start seeding, just in case of another hard frost.

Mark Cutts, based at the Alberta Agriculture Information Centre in Stettler, says he has not yet seen any sign of fall crops starting to emerge.

Soil moisture maps, based on annual averages over the past 30 years, indicate that conditions in central Alberta are near normal from Red Deer north, but are a bit below average further south.

Beef and Forage specialist Karen Lindquist, meanwhile, notes grass still needs some more time to grow before it can support cows and their calves.
