MEDICINE HAT:   Glen Motz is surrounded by his family as he’s announced the new conservative candidate.

Voting for the Federal Conservative Candidate for the Medicine Hat-Cardston-Warner riding wrapped up Saturday at the Medicine Hat Lodge. The position was left vacant after the sudden passing of MP Jim Hillyer in March. Since Thursday just over 3,100 people all over the riding voted by ranking the 6 candidates.

After counting the votes 4 times, Glen Motz, recently retired from the Medicine Hat Police Service, was announced as the winner Saturday evening.

“I don’t know if it’s truly sunk it yet,” said Motz after winning. He thanked his family and volunteers for helping him throughout the campaign and said it was a blessing to run against the other candidates.

“I was truly impressed with the quality of people that were involved,” he says.

“They’re good people, any one of them would have done well.”

Motz will go on to campaign to become the federal Member of Parliament in a by-election. No other party has announced a candidate, and the date for the by election has not yet been announced.

Motz says he’s looking forward to the chance of representing this riding.

“This is about being a representative for people that I care deeply about, in a riding that is fantastic.”

Motz beat out five other candidates for the nomination, Brian Benoit, Paul Hinman, Gregory Ranger, Joesph Schow, and Michael Jones.
