Municipal Affairs Minister Happy With Feedback After Summer MGA Review Tour

LETHBRIDGE – Municipal Affairs Minister Danielle Larivee made her final stop in Lethbridge on Friday after a 20 community tour.

The current, consolidated Municipal Government Act (MGA) came into effect in the mid-1990s, and guides municipalities across Alberta on how they should function. A review process of the MGA began in February 2014 with consultations between the government and Alberta residents, municipal and business leaders, community organizations and many others.

That feedback was then compiled, and a Modernized MGA was introduced to the legislature this May.

The purpose of this summer tour was to gain even more feedback on proposed amendments before the legislation moves to final debate.

“There’s always potential that maybe we missed a small point that could have some unintended consequences that we didn’t think of,” said Larivee. “So, the more people that look at it, the better piece of legislation it is. This is about hearing from people… to make it the most responsive piece of legislation, so that Albertans get the really best they can.”

She went on to say she’s happy with the overall outcome from the sessions, noting that a lot of the feedback was positive in nature and feels a balance has been struck between all regional perspectives.

The next step will be to propose final amendments based around the feedback collected as it goes to final debate this fall. Larivee says she would like to move on regulations ahead of the 2017 election.
