Fraudulent STARS Lottery Scam Prompts Warning from Police

Jul 18, 2016 | 5:29 PM

ALBERTA – RCMP are warning about a new scam across Alberta involving the STARS lottery.

Individuals claiming to be with the lottery are phoning, advising that the victim’s number was randomly selected to win $750,000 and a new car.

However, in order to collect the prize, they’re required to pay a fee in advance. Many either never hear back from the person claiming to be with STARS, or get even more requests for money.

You’re urged to contact police if you receive a call in regard to this or other scams.

RCMP released some tips to better protect yourself from fraud, as well:

– Keep track of contests, draws and lotteries you enter.

– Challenge a caller who says you’ve won a prize to tell you where and when you entered.

– Check out the charity’s financial information. For many organizations, it can be found online.

– Ask for identification. If the solicitor refuses to tell you or does not have the information, hang up and report it to law enforcement.

– Call the charity. Find out if it’s aware of the solicitation and has authorized the use of its name.

– Refuse high pressure appeals. Legitimate fundraisers won’t push you to give on the spot.

– Be wary of charities offering to send a courier or overnight delivery service to collect your donation immediately.

– Be wary of guaranteed sweepstakes winnings in exchange for a contribution. According to law, you never have to donate anything to be eligible to win.
