LETHBRIDGE – Rachel Nicol set a new personal best time of 1:06.68 and finished fifth in the 100-metre breaststroke, climbing from a ranking of 18 going into the Olympics in Rio.

It was the second straight day of improvement for the Lethbridge swimmer, as she set a personal best of 1:06.73 on Sunday (Aug 7) to advance to the finals.

Peter Schori, Head Coach for Lethbridge Amateur Swim Club and Nichol’s Personal Swim Coach, said that Rachel has a very good chance of qualifying for the 4-by-100 medley relay on day six.

“Ninety-nine per-cent of the time, whoever goes fastest in the final race makes the relay and because Rachel beat our other Canadian breaststroker there is a good chance that she will compete after tonight.”

Schori said, that the medley team will be made up of outstanding swimmers such as Penny Oleksiak – the 16-year-old Canadian who won silver in the 100-metre butterfly – as well as backstroke and freestyle swimmers.
