Employees Given Chance to Take Over Southern Alberta Business

Aug 11, 2016 | 3:56 PM

LETHBRIDGE – Employees currently working for the six pubs owned by the Pop’s Group, will soon have a chance to takeover the business.

Managing Partner, Scott Crighton, stated that the move comes as the province looks to increase the minimum wage, something he believes will be a major challenge for the entire industry.

“With the employees running it they are mentally bought into it, they are financially bought into it, and at the end of the year that bottom number is theirs,” Crighton told Lethbridge News Now. “So I think that’s the best way we can beat the challenges that are coming up on us.”

Crighton also went over how they plan on rolling the transition out when it begins in September.

“We’re going to try it with one site first… the entire site will be available for any of our current employees to own, probably a franchise model so they can continue to have our support. It’ll still be up to the employees if that’s the route they wish to take,” Crighton explained, adding that if it’s successful they will open it up to the entire chain.

While each Pop’s Group site already has at least one employee who is also an owner, Crighton noted this is the first time the staff will take full control.
