Hurricanes captain scores game winner to snap losing streak

EVERETT – Coming into a road game against the second best team in the Western Hockey League, while also in the midst of a five game losing skid, it was the Hurricanes captain who stepped up Saturday night (Nov. 19).

Tyler Wong scored his team leading 11th goal of the season at the 11:35 mark of the third period, giving the Canes a 2-1 lead and ultimately the win over the Everett Silvertips.

The Hurricanes opened the scoring, as Ryan Vandervlis picked up his first goal of the season with under a minute to play in the first. The Silvertips would respond a few minutes into the second period with a marker from Lucas Skrumeda.

From that point on Hurricanes goaltender Stuart Skinner was flawless, turning aside 31 shots total, 12 of which came in the third period.

Not only does the victory pull the team out of an ugly slide, but it puts them just a single point back of the Edmonton Oil Kings for third in the Central Division standings.

It should also provide a boost in confidence to the club, which has struggled badly on the road this season. Going into the game, the Hurricanes were just 2-6-0-2 as the visitors, while Everett had boasted a very solid 8-1-0-0 at home.

The three game road trip through the U.S. Division – played in just three days – will wrap up Sunday night (Nov. 20) in Portland, as the Canes take on the Winterhawks.
