PORTLAND – With two big goals in two nights, the Hurricanes captain has got the ‘Cane Train’ back on the tracks.

After scoring the game winner Saturday night (Nov. 19) in Everett, Tyler Wong stepped up again, this time burying his second goal of the night in overtime to give the Hurricanes a 6-5 win over the Portland Winterhawks.

Wong now has four goals in his last three games, and leads the club with 13 on the season. He’s also second on the team with 21 points in 20 games, coming in behind Ryley Lindgren – who also found the back of the net twice against Portland – and his 25 points.

After Lindgren opened the scoring three minutes into the game, the Hurricanes would give up two goals in short order and a third before the first period was out, marking the end of the night for starter Stuart Skinner.

Following a second period that saw Portland outscore Lethbridge 2-1 and outshoot them 13-5, the Hurricanes came alive in the third. They peppered the Winterhawks goaltender, outshooting them 14-9 in the final frame and scoring two goals to tie things up and force overtime.

Just 18 seconds into bonus time Wong ended the game and grabbed two points for the visitors.

Not only was the win crucial in the standings – the Canes are now one point back of Edmonton for third and two points behind Red Deer for second in the Central Division – but it should also allow them to breathe a little easier on the road.

Going into a road trip that saw the team play three games in three days, the Hurricanes had one of the worst road records in the WHL at 2-6-0-2.

The four road wins that they now have bring them up to about league average, and taking four points out of a possible six on the road is also the sort of thing that will get a team into the playoffs, if they can keep it up.

The Canes now have some time off, before hosting the Swift Current Broncos Friday (Nov. 25) at the Enmax Centre.
