LETHBRIDGE – It was a make or break situation, but the Lethbridge Hurricanes pulled it off in the shootout Friday (Feb. 17) night, in game two of a four game home stand against the Victoria Royals.

The boys made a huge 6-4 comeback last Saturday (Feb. 12) when they took on the Kootenay Ice in Cranbrook, after a devastating shutout loss to Medicine Hat just the night before.

It was a strongly matched game at the Enmax Centre, for the fourth place Royals and second place Hurricanes, in their respective divisions. The Lethbridge squad just barely edged Victoria in total shots on goal, 40-39, but neither managed to take advantage of a power play opportunity.

Blake Bargar started strong for the BC team, opening up scoring half way through the first period. It was short lived, however, as Hurricanes captain Tyler Wong answered back just 1:49 later, assisted by Brennan Menell and Brennan Riddle. Matthew Phillips managed to slide another past Stuart Skinner just before the end of the period, to take the lead for the Royals.

Lethbridge pulled ahead in the second period with three goals from Alec Baer, Egor Babenko and Zak Zborosky. Regan Nagy had the period’s only goal for the opposing team. But the tension was thick between Victoria’s Kaid Oliver and Lethbridge’s Zane Franklin, with both taking five-minute majors for fighting.

Nagy came back with just 1:30 left in the third to tie the game up, and send it into overtime. Neither team was able to register a goal. On the last shootout attempt, Tyler Wong made it past Royals goalie, Griffen Outhouse, taking a 5-4 victory on home ice.

The 35-16-4-3 Hurricanes are now just one point back of the Medicine Hat Tiger for first place in the Central Division, and riding a two game win streak. They are back in action Saturday (Feb. 18) night to take on the Saskatoon Blades.
