“In the Field” goes inside to explore Ag Expo

LETHBRIDGE –  The three day 2017 ag Expo and North America Seed Fair again boasted the latest and greatest in agricultural products and innovation.

With more than 350 indoor exhibitors from across North America, the annual event that ran from March 1st to the third, included 40 new exhibitors. As well, Machinery Row outside the exhibition hall provided 150,000 square feet of space to showcase the latest in technology.

One particular feature was a souped-up “super-combine”.  It’s used by the team at the Lethbridge Research and Development Centre, and has special modifications, including a two-row corn header and a two-metre straight-cut header.

Researcher Steve Simmill says they run a lot of agronomic systems on winter wheat plots, and corn research for the Alberta Corn committee, as well as different rotational, fertilizer and fungicide studies.  He says it allows them to handle a larger plot faster and more efficiently, while getting all the data off of it in one shot.

The operator can also take and bag samples from right inside the cab.

While you can’t buy this exact combine at your local dealership, Simmill says some of the special features are now showing up on regular combines.

The North American Seed Fair, which is one of the oldest Seed Fair’s in Western Canada, showcased over 53 classes of Pedigreed Seed, Open Classes, and Junior Classes.

A list of the Seed Fair winners can be found on the Exhibition Park website.
