MEDICINE HAT – The Hurricanes were first on the scoreboard in Medicine Hat, as Captain Tyler Wong slipped past Tigers goalie Michael Bullion just over three minutes into the game. From there, the rivals traded goals back and forth throughout the match.

The Tigers’ Max Gerlach evened the score at the 6:17 mark, but two minutes later, Ryan Bowen had the Canes leading 2-1.

After each team posted a couple of minor penalties, the Tigers’ Clayton Kirichenko had the game tied again at 12:44. However, Tyler Wong netted his second point of the period five minutes later, taking advantage of the Hurricanes’ six total power play opportunities, with assists from Egor Babenko and Giorgio Estephan. The Canes went into intermission riding a 3-2 lead.

Both sides then battled to the 14:00 mark, without penalties, before Max Gerlach registered his second of the game, to tie the score 3-3. Less than a minute later, Hurricane Brady Pouteau and the Tigers’ Steven Owre served penalties for roughing. The frame ended on the tie, with the Tigers leading shots on goal 28-18.

The third period opened with the Hurricanes on a power play. Ryan Vanderlis found the back of the net on a power play at 4:14, taking the score to 4-3. That goal left the Tigers chomping at the bit and putting on the pressure again, but Stuart Skinner stood strong against another shot by Gerlach.

The Lethbridge squad had plenty of chances in the third. Brennan Riddle surged ahead with the game winner and put his team ahead 5-3. With the Tigers on the power play, David Quenneville tried to bring it back in Medicine Hat’s favour adding one last point. But his efforts weren’t enough, as the Hurricanes celebrated the game five, 5-4 victory in regulation time.

The Tigers out-shot the Canes 41-27 overall, putting tremendous pressure on Skinner.

The Hurricanes host the Tigers for game six Sunday (Apr. 16) night, as the home-town team tries to make it to the final four.
