Knights finish in third place at Lethbridge baseball tournament

LETHBRIDGE – The Medicine Hat Knights got their American Legion baseball season started on a strong note this weekend.

The “A” squad finished in third place at the Ron Matthews Memorial Tournament in Lethbridge, topping the Lethbridge Miners 13-6 in the bronze medal game on Monday.

Travis Small drove in three RBIs and scored two runs. Pitchers Zack Stark and Justin Bourassa combined for just four hits allowed during the game.

The Medicine Hat Moose Monarchs and the Medicine Hat Majestics were also in action over the weekend.

The Moose Monarchs were in Vauxhall for a tournament at the Baseball Academy. The Monarchs lost their first game against the Calgary Jr. Dinos 9-8 on Friday, but topped Vauxhall Academy 9-8 and defeated the Lethbridge Elks 5-4 on Saturday.

However in the final game against the Great Falls Chargers, the Monarchs were defeated 9-8 in the final inning. Wyatt Bleskin of the Chargers doubled on Monarchs pitcher Drake Thompson, driving in runs from Alan Larocque and Cade Stuff to win the game.

Jack Suhai and Tanner Kidd each had a pair of RBIs for the Monarchs during the game.

The Majestics travelled to Calgary Saturday and Sunday, finishing with a 2-2 record. the Majestics topped the Calgary Angels 12-2 and doubled up the Calgary Dodgers 16-8 on Saturday. On Sunday, the Majestics were defeated 5-3 by the Calgary Indians and dropped a 13-1 decision to the Calgary Rockies.

No statistics for the Majestics game were immediately available.

The Monarchs play their first home games during the Servus Credit Union Tournament from June 2-4 at Athletic Park and Jeffries Park. The Knights’ first home game goes June 6 at Jeffries against Vauxhall and the Majestics host Lethbridge on May 30 at Jeffries.
