Spearman to seek a second term

LETHBRIDGE – Mayor Chris Spearman announced Thursday morning (June 29) that he will be seeking a second term in this fall’s municipal election.

Speaking with local media, Spearman noted that his plan will be to continue creating diverse job opportunities, while also keeping the community’s best interest in mind.

“I think the city’s on the right track in terms of growth, in terms of economic development,” Spearman noted, adding that he had been considering this decision for some time.

“We’re one of the leading cities in the province in terms of quality of life, and certainly with over a billion-dollars of announced investments in the city — more than half of it from the private sector. I think we’re on the right track.”

He went on to say it’s important that the city “maintain a progressive pace,” ensuring that it’s a welcoming environment for those that are considering bringing business investments to the area.

However, Spearman certainly knows that there will be challenges for a city that’s near a population of 100,000. He added that having a council that works together cohesively for the community’s best interest are among his top priorities.

“My vision for the city in the future is that we need to continue to encourage people to come here, continue to encourage businesses to invest here and we want those that are already here to invest and grow within our city.”

Lethbridge’s election is set for October 16, 2017. There are currently five confirmed candidates running for city council.
