WINNIPEG – Canadian rock music legend Kenny Shields, the lead singer of Streetheart, has died, according to a Facebook post from one of his bandmates.

Jeff Neill wrote Shields died early Friday, July 21, with his family by his side, at Winnipeg’s St. Boniface General Hospital. He had undergone emergency surgery in early July to treat serious complications from a heart condition, according to an earlier posting by Neill.

Born in Nokomis, Sask. in 1947, Shields first burst onto the music scene as leader of the Saskatoon-based band Witness, Inc. in the 1960s. But he gained his greatest fame later in the 1970s when he joined with four other musicians in Regina to form Streetheart.

Hits by Streetheart included “Under My Thumb,” “What Kind of Love is This,” “Action,” “One More Time,” and “Hollywood.” The band earned six gold and four platinum albums and a Juno award.

Streetheart had set out on a farewell tour that was to include a stop at Average Joe’s in Lethbridge Saturday, July 22. The tour was cancelled July 5.
