MEDICINE HAT – Investigators have determined the cause of the fire that left one person dead after an explosion rocked a home in Crescent Heights last week.

Emergency crews were called to 20 Hudson Way NE on Wednesday morning after hearing reports of an explosion.

Fire prevention officer Carter Gramlich said once the fire was extinguished and walls were removed, the body of a 39-year-old man was discovered inside.

Crews also found the source of the explosion.

Gramlich said the fire appears to have been intentionally set.

“Our fire investigation revealed that the fire had been incendiary in nature,” he said. “We’d found a gas line within the residence had been tampered with.”

Gramlich said gas crews were also called to the scene on Wednesday and determined that no other homes were in danger.

“We don’t believe this was an accident,” Gramlich added. “People in Medicine Hat should not be at all worried that their gas supply has any failures in it, that it may cause any leaks.”
