CRANBROOK –  With the fire rating high in many locations any help to prevent or fight a fire is a necessity. That help was crucial Tuesday afternoon south-east of Cranbrook, when a travel trailer caught fire on the side of a road, in an area frequented by Southern Albertans.

Josh Hoffman, of Pattison Broadcasting in Cranbrook reported the details:

The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) is applauding the efforts of campers and residents who took immediate action after a fifth wheel trailer caught fire in the Lake Koocanusa area.

The BC Wildfire Service responded with helicopter support and assistance from the Baynes Lake Fire Department to the incident on Newgate road.

The driver was reportedly able to stop and detach the trailer from the vehicle.  The trailer is a total loss but the Regional District say this is another example where things could have been much worse given the tinder dry conditions.

The RDEK reminds everyone to remain vigilant in preventing and reporting fires if smoke or flame is seen.
