FortisAlberta to begin LED streetlight installation in Picture Butte and Coalhurst

Aug 1, 2017 | 10:51 AM

PICTURE BUTTE – Nearly 500 streetlights will be installed in the towns of Picture Butte and Coalhurst over the next few weeks, as part of a conversion process from high pressure sodium (HPS) to LED technology.

Last May, FortisAlberta received approval from the Alberta Utilities Commission to go ahead with LED streetlight conversions in more than 130 communities aross their service territory.

That’s in addition to the communities of Canmore, Crowsnest Pass, Devon, Okotoks, St. Alberta and Wetaskiwin, which underwent the conversions in 2016.

According to FortisAlberta, LED lights offer many benefits, including reduced energy consumption. The fixtures are dark-sky friendly with no up-light, meaning there is less light pollution. The new bulbs also produce a whiter light, resulting in a higher light quality that improves safety.

Installation in the town of Picture Butte will begin August 8 and will be completed by August 14.

Crews will be in Coalhurst on or about August 13, with installation likely completed by August 18.
