Resolution discussions taking place in attempted murder, sexual assault case

LETHBRIDGE – It appears progress is being made in the attempted murder and sexual assault case of Denzel Dre Colton Bird.

Alin Mayer, an agent appearing for Bird’s lawyer, Tonii Roulston, stated that Roulston is in resolution discussions with the Crown, and asked that the matter be adjourned until Aug. 17.

Outside the courtroom, Mayer explained that she could only say the discussions were ongoing, and that it doesn’t necessarily mean a plea will be coming when Bird returns to court next week.

The progress comes after a number of delays in the case, most notably when Bird fired, re-hired, then once again fired his first lawyer, Greg White.

White took on the case in October of 2016, shortly after Bird’s arrest on charges of attempted murder, aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault with a weapon, aggravated assault and break and enter. White withdrew from the case in April, at which time Bird confirmed to the court that he wanted new counsel. However, two weeks later, Bird re-hired White, before dismissing him again on May 26.

The charges against Bird are in relation to an incident on Sept. 30, 2016. Members of the Lethbridge Police Service say a 25-year old woman was walking to work that morning, when she was struck with a weapon, dragged into an alley off 6 Avenue South and sexually assaulted.

The woman sustained life-threatening injuries, which required months of treatment in a Calgary hospital.

LPS did note that with no apparent connections between the accused and alleged victim, they believe the attack was random.
