Possible resolution coming for woman accused of leaving child in freezing car

LETHBRIDGE – Two weeks after a trial date was set for one of the women accused of leaving their children in a locked and freezing car last December, it looks like the co-accused is close to having her case dealt with.

A lawyer appearing Tuesday morning (Aug. 8) for the woman – who can’t be named to protect the identity of the children – explained that they are moving towards resolution, and the matter was adjourned to Aug. 24.

A two-day trial – running Dec. 11 and 12, 2017 – was set for the other woman on July 24.

The two women were charged with failing to provide the necessaries of life, following an incident on the night of Dec. 15, 2016.

Around 11:30 p.m., Lethbridge Police responded to a report of a child crying inside a locked, shut-off vehicle that was parked along the 200 block of 5 Street South.

Officers arrived to find a toddler in a car seat who was crying, shivering and in distress. When they broke a window to gain entry, they found a second young child under a pile of clothes. Both children – ages three and four – were taken to hospital as a precaution, but were uninjured.

At the time, police noted that the temperature was -18 C.

“Upon further investigation, we located a 31-year old woman and a 24-year old woman – who were determined to be the mothers of the children – inside a nearby bar,” stated LPS Staff Sgt. Leon Borbandy, during a media conference. “Using video surveillance supplied to us by the bar, we determined that the children were left un-attended for over an hour.

“I believe if the children were left for longer, it could have been a fatality,” he added.
