Night scrimmages cancelled as Lethbridge Hurricanes gear up for Red vs. White game

LETHBRIDGE – Team B defeated Team C 7-4 in what would end up being the last scrimmage game of training camp for the Lethbridge Hurricanes. The team announced the three scrimmages originally scheduled for tonight (Aug. 28) have been cancelled.

Yegor Zudilov, just signed to a Standard Player Agreement by the Hurricanes last week, led the way for Team B with a hat trick, and four points in the victory. Zudilov was selected 48th overall in this past year’s CHL Import Draft. Today’s performance was another in what has been a strong training camp for the Russian born import.

Another player having a strong training camp to this point is forward Ryan Vandervlis.

The Red Deer native is entering his third full season with the Hurricanes, and spoke about how training camp is going after today’s scrimmage. Vandervlis says being one of the older guys on the team now is a little different for him.

“One of the kids sitting on the bench next to me said he was 14 years old, so I’m sitting there thinking I have five years on this guy,” said Vandervlis, who added it’s awesome being back around the guys but admits it’s strange not having former captain Tyler Wong around.

“Ever since I’ve been here I’ve had Wonger and some of the older guys to lean on, so it’s an adjustment coming in and being a leader right from the start,” said Vandervlis. He says he wants that responsibility of being a leader, and believes the veterans on the team now are ready to lead the group.

With the departure of last year’s veterans, the rookies on the Hurricanes will be expected to help contribute to the team’s success. Vandervlis says they have a good group of young guys.

“These guys are looking good out on the ice, and I can tell they’re ready to step up,” he added.

You can add center Giorgio Estephan as another player who’s been impressed by the youngs guys during training camp.

“It’s exciting anytime you see a new crop a kids joining the team. One of the young guys just joined my billet house, so it’s definitely nice to see some new faces and meet some new characters,” said Estephan, adding everyone’s been good so far and he’s looking forward to seeing what they have to offer as they move forward.

CANES SIGN TWO – The Lethbridge Hurricanes also announced they’ve signed Drew Englot and Jacob Boucher to WHL Standard Player Agreements. Englot says it’s been his dream since he was younger to play in the WHL, and that dream is a little closer now.
