LETHBRIDGE – September 2017 was about the same as 2016 for new housing starts in Lethbridge, which means it’s still an up year overall.

According to Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. there were 64 new homes started during the month, virtually unchanged from September 2016. One difference was an increase in multi-family dwellings, from 12 to 20, which offset a drop in single homes from 51 to 44.

So far this year in the Lethbridge census metropolitan area (CMA), single family home construction is up five per cent, while multiples are up more than 30 per cent. A total of 540 new homes have been started, up more than 12 per cent over last year.

Total urban housing starts in September for Alberta were up two per cent to 2,393, and are up 25 per cent so far this year, thanks in part to the rebuild of Fort McMurray. Wood Buffalo has seen 1,221 new homes started this year, compared to 26 a year ago.

Calgary and Edmonton are also showing increases, of 22 and 25 per cent respectively, though Calgary’s September numbers were down. So far this year housing starts are down in Red Deer (41 per cent), Medicine Hat (26 per cent), and Grande Prairie (15 per cent).
