Hurricanes edged by Silvertips, despite special teams dominance

LETHBRIDGE – The Lethbridge Hurricanes uneven start to the 2017-18 season continued Friday night (Oct. 13), as they fell 4-3 to the Everett Silvertips for a second straight loss.

The home club fell behind early, surrendering the first goal of the game just 59-seconds in as Bryce Kindopp found the back of the net. The Silvertips Riley Sutter then made it 2-0 with just over a minute remaining in the opening period.

The second was a much different story, thanks to the Lethbridge’s league best power play, which now stands at 37.9-per cent after going 3/5 against Everett.

Jordy Bellerive got things started for the Hurricanes, scoring his second of the season on the man advantage, with assists going to Ryan Vandervlis and Giorgio Estephan. With five minutes left in the period, Dylan Cozens evened the score – again on the power play – with Bellerive then putting his team ahead 3-2 with his second of the night while up a man.

Unfortunately for the ‘Canes, that’s where the penalties stopped for the Silvertips.

Kindopp tied things early in the third for Everett with his second, and Sutter continued the trend by and picking up his second goal of the evening and the eventual game winner, with just under four minutes to play in the contest.

The loss drops the Hurricanes record to 3-4 and marks their first loss on home ice this season.

On the positive side, in addition to boasting the WHL’s best power play, the Hurricanes now also have the fifth best penalty kill in the league, which is operating at 83.9-per cent. They killed all five Everett power plays in the losing cause.

Next up for Lethbridge is a single road game in Calgary, against a Hitmen club that has struggled out of the gate, going 2-5-1. They will then return home for a lengthy seven game home stand.
