MEDICINE HAT – Steve Vogelsang made his first court appearance Tuesday morning in Provincial Court.

The former CTV news anchor and Red River College instructor was dressed in blue prison garb and appeared in person.

Vogelsang has been charged with two counts of robbery in connection with bank robberies at the 13th Avenue RBC and the Dunmore Road BLethbidgeank of Montreal last week. He was arrested early Saturday morning.

In both robberies, it’s alleged Vogelsang entered the business and demanded a sum of money before fleeting the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash.

On Tuesday, he gave a quick smile and a wave to a few familiar faces in the gallery, before taking his seat in the prisoner’s box.

The judge, reading over his file, made a comment about the celebrity in the room.

Vogelsang seemed alert and present while before the judge.

Lethbridge lawyer Greg White requested his case be adjourned, saying he needs more time to gather information before a bail hearing takes place.

Vogelsang was taken back into custody and is expected to appear in court on Thursday.

In a release Tuesday afternoon, Medicine Hat police say they have been in contact with the Regina Police Service, who are investigating similar offences in that city.
